A hiker watches a creator's boot review in March and buys at REI in May. A family saves an RV road trip video and test drives at a dealership weeks later. Your team runs that boot footage in three ads. A link report won't show most of that.

Brands keep putting more money into creators. IAB reports that U.S. creator ad spend was projected to reach $37 billion in 2025 and $44 billion in 2026. IAB also found that 40% of buyers rank overall ROI as their top KPI for creator campaigns.

In Popfly, creator ROI comes from three metrics: content value, sales, and earned media value (EMV). This guide covers how to understand the metrics for creator marketing and how long to wait before you judge a campaign.

Key takeaways

  • Look at content value, sales, and EMV together to see what your creator program returns.
  • Run the creator assets you get, and check content value in your dashboard.
  • Give every creator their own link, code, or Storefront so sales tie back to the right person.
  • Check EMV for sponsored posts that get seen and talked about but don't sell right away.
  • Click any metric in your Popfly dashboard to see exactly how Popfly calculates it.
  • Wait long enough to judge a campaign, based on how long your customers take to buy.

1. The three metrics behind creator ROI

Popfly calculates content value, sales, and EMV for each campaign in your dashboard. Popfly's performance tracking shows impressions, engagements, posts, EMV, content value, sales, orders, and creators for each campaign.

Which metric matters most for each type of program

UGC, sponsored, and affiliate programs pay off in different ways. Look first at the metric that matches what you bought.

  • UGC: You're paying for assets you run on your own channels. Watch content value first, then sales from ads that use those assets.
  • Sponsored or influencer: You're paying for a creator's audience and their community's trust. Watch EMV first, then sales and reusable content.
  • Affiliate and Storefronts: You're paying for sales, on performance. Watch sales first, then EMV from organic posts.

Ambassador programs mix all three, so look at every metric over a full season.

Compare your results with your own past programs and the other channels you spend on.

2. Measure content value

When a creator shoots for you, you get talent, a location, real product use, and editing in one deliverable. A food brand gets a recipe cooked in a real kitchen. An automaker gets a rig on an actual road trip.

The assets you'll reuse most show realistic use. A creator wearing waterproof boots through a river crossing is more convincing than a studio hero shot. That footage works well in ads and on product pages.

Instead of counting every file a creator delivers, focus on the assets you actually run. Then check content value in your Popfly dashboard, where it sits next to EMV and sales.

Check your usage rights

You can only reuse content you have rights to. Confirm licensing terms before you run a creator's video in ads or on a retail partner's site. Popfly UGC campaigns keep content delivery and licensing in one place, so you know which assets you can use and where.

How brands reuse creator content

Hyundai got 300+ brand-ready assets from one Popfly campaign for its XRT vehicles. The team reused them across paid, organic, retail, and dealer channels.

Camp Chef ran creator content during its biggest sales stretch of the year. Marketing Manager Kyle Andrus said, "3 of our top 5 ads during our Black Friday season were all sourced from Popfly Creators."

3. Track sales by creator

Set up tracking in Popfly before the first post goes live. Links you add later miss the first rush of traffic. You have three options:

  • Affiliate links: Give each creator a unique link so you see revenue and commission by creator.
  • Promo codes: Give each creator a unique code. Codes pick up in-store, in-app, and later purchases.
  • Storefronts: Let creators curate your products in their own shop, with creator-level attribution built in.

Instead of sharing one generic link across 30 creators, give each creator a unique link and code. You'll see who drove each sale.

Storefronts make this easier at scale. With Popfly, 1,573 creators added Backcountry products to their Storefronts, and each sale ties back to the creator who drove it. Popfly's affiliate revenue tracking connects content views to purchases in real time.

After the campaign, your Popfly dashboard shows sales and orders next to posts and creators. Use those together to see which creators delivered and who to bring back.

4. Measure earned media value

Use EMV to give credit to posts that get seen and talked about.

Sponsored campaigns lean on EMV most. A November ski film or an RV road trip video may drive few sales right away and still get in front of the right people.

Look at impressions and engagements alongside EMV to see which posts people watched and responded to. Social listening also picks up brand mentions from creators.

Keep EMV next to sales and content value when you review a campaign. A creator with modest sales and high EMV may be building demand you'll see next season.

5. Give campaigns enough time to pay off

Creator content keeps working after a campaign ends. The IPA's influencer marketing analysis found a short-term ROI index of 99, against an all-channel average of 100. Over the long term, the index rose to 151, compared with 77 for paid social.

Shoppers rewatch reviews right before they buy, whether that's before a trip or a car-shopping weekend. Affiliate links can keep earning as long as the content stays live.

How long to wait

  • 30 days for flash promos
  • 90 to 180 days for product launches
  • A full season or year for ambassador and always-on programs

Pick the window before launch and put it in the brief. Creators will know how you'll judge the work, and nobody calls the result early.

Compare results season over season or holiday over holiday. Seasonal swings throw off month-to-month comparisons. Popfly Evergreens, an always-on creator program, keeps content and sales coming after your peak season.
